Sigh... to make a long story short, I just had a most unsatisfactory
encounter with a BOAT/US claims adjuster and an underwriter. Comparing
notes with a dock neighbor who has an 86 Tashiba 36, we found they're
paying far less for their insurance than we are for our '85 Baba 35
($750 vs $1100). The underwriter swears it's the difference in the
boats' ages and *maybe* a USCG Aux discount for the Tashiba (not clear
about that yet - have to ask the owner). Nonetheless, the first
contact, a claims agent, was totally unprofessional, laughing hard when
I said I'd compared premiums and found a major difference. She accused
me of making up "this hypothetical boat"! I finally got through to an
underwriter who swears we have the lowest possible premium and, when I
said I'd ask my friend about what information I might have missed in
trying to sort out why he has a lower premium, the underwriter said
"he'll probably lie about it." Quite simply, who needs it?
So... has anyone else had this sort of encounter with BOAT/US
insurance? What other insurance companies are people using?
