Here we are, replying to ourselves again. Just remembered one more important
issue about the engine replacement.
When we first set out to replace the Volvo we got a recommendation to go to
an engine broker in Washington state. The broker doesn't stock engines, just
keeps track of where engines are and can divert them to his customers. We
emailed them for quotes and got a really good quote for a 4HE3E engine, sold
as are all Yanmars with a transmission. We kept researching what we wanted
and settled on an inclined mirror transmission, the inclination to keep our
engine horizontal and the mirror allows it to run in either direction with
equal efficiency as the thrust bearings are the same forward and reverse.
(Hoping that when a tranny goes out, it is the forward gear. With the
mirror, we can flip the lever for the morse cable connection, pull the
right-hand prop and put on our spare left-hand prop, and drive away in
forward with no reverse.) The broker did not have access to the
engine/tranny combination we wanted, so we called Bosun's Locker and told
them we had this great deal with the broker but we "wanted to get it closer
to home". They decided a sale was a sale, even if they didn't make as much
on it as they might have, and matched the broker's price. We were pretty
lucky, and blind luck usually beats stealth and cunning anyway...
