Hi Paul. I have now obtained quotes for the engines I referred to. The Yanmar 3YM30 is $8700, priced down to $8200 if I act in the next month, The Volvo D1-30 is $8100, an unknown price adjustment if I act in the next 60 days and the Westerbeke 30Bthree was $7100 with no time restrictions. All will require a new control panel, included in the price. The panels are basic with a tach and dummy lights. The "deluxe" panels range from $350 to $500. Installation is about $3000. The Westerbeke can use the same shaft. I have had at least one engine from each of these companies and was most happy with the Westerbeke. I like the price also. If cruising far from the U.S., the issue on the Westerbeke would be parts and service. However; it is a sailboat and I can sail it to a place where parts and service are available.

Hi Rick, I'm in the same position as you, I looked into changing to a Yanmar but the cost put me off, we pay a lot more for engines in the UK than most other places.
I think changing to a Yanmar also means a new prop, and probably a new prop shaft due to the different direction of rotation.
I wish you luck and please keep us posted as to how you get on.

Subject: [Baba-L] Engine re-power
Hi all. I'm afraid the time has come for Lorac's Volvo MD-11 to be put to rest. This is an area where I need some insights from those with past experience. Have any of you done a re-power from Volvo MD-11 to another power unit. I am considering either the Yanmar; 3YM30, the Westerbeke; 30B three or the Volvo; D1-30. I would like to know the following:
1) What rngine did you re-power with?
2) Was the installation fairly simple or highly complicated?
3) Were there any clearance issues?
4) A ball park idea of installation cost? ( probably a WEAK attempt to defend myself fromthe marine indusry treatment)
Thanks for the help.
Fair winds, blue water.
