Rick,
I'm cruising in Mexico and use my SSB every day for weather and comms with
other cruisers. I have an Icom 710 and many of my friends have the 802.
Over half of the folks with the Icom 802 are experiencing transmission
problems with their units. One has documented recordings that he sent to
Icom and now they have admitted there is a problem with some of the radios.
They recently sent a team from Japan to La Paz to work on the 802 aboard
Endeavor. They have not been able to isolate the malfunctions yet. The
symptoms are a fading in and out while transmitting that is hard to
understand. Out of six people that I know who have Icom 802s, and talk to
on the SSB, three have had the transmission problem. As Cindy says the 710s
are still made and are good radios.
For what it's worth.
