For many years we used a chain scrubber: three brushes facing each
other attached to a telescoping aluminum pole. As the chain is
retrieved by the windlass, you scrub the mud and critters off at the
water line. Low tech, effective, and no retrofitting. Unfortunately
the chain scrubber made a leap for freedom when it was improperly
stowed on deck at 25 degrees of heel. I'm looking for its
replacement. As long as it was onboard the chain locker never reeked.
