Perhaps I was not clear in my comments on the PYI/PSS shaft seal. I
would not go back to a packed-seal.
The PYI/PSS seal has been perfect, and has never malfunctioned at any
time. Replacing it every five years
has been a conservative choice, as the condition of the old units was
unchanged from new. We have never
hauled the boat just for this replacement. Rather, it has been done
during a normal haul-out.

Drip-less seals are not new, having been used in industrial equipment
for decades.

However, the choice is a personal one, and whatever you feel
comfortable with is the best choice for you.
