Oooooohh... washing anything in gasoline? Very Bad Idea. Better to go
with WD-40 (fish oil, at least, as opposed to a complex hydrocarbon soup
filled with carcinogens and explosively flammable in small quantities)
or my fave, 50% alcohol (use 90%+ pure alcohol and not rubbing alcohol -
the wintergreen scent leaves an ugly film), 50% distilled water (avoids
mineral deposits), and a few drops of Dawn as a surfactant "kicker".
This stuff does wonders on all sorts of things including optics on
binoculars. Plan B is "Goo Gone", "Goof Off", or similar citrus-based
cleaners (despite all the hype and ballyhoo, they actualy do work). But
gas? Nah.

Speaking of lubricants, I'm impressed by Boeshield. It's a spray that
delivers Teflon grease in liquid form (the carrier evaporates, leaving a
thin film of grease). Grease is a dust and dirt magnet so don't use it
on everything in sight, but things that demand a light shot of grease do
well with Boeshield.

Cheers,
Rick Emerson
