Rick's suggestion of a plastic bag is helpful, but perhaps even a bit better
is to buy a plastic bucket at Home Depot, and cut a hole in the bottom that
results in a snug fit around the base of the winch.
All the parts can be washed in a small quantity of diesel fuel or kerosene.
Discard it properly when done. Alternately, you can use a very small amount
of gasoline, which has the advantage that you let it evaporate and help
maintain the world's air levels of hydrocarbons.
The caution about not putting on too much grease is good advice. However,
the small spring loaded pawls should not be greased. Use a fine
non-corrosive oil for that, or the pawls may jam.
