As I just spent the day sanding down to bare teak, I've been kicking around
what to do next. Sure, Honey Teak sounds great, but it's expensive and (for
the chemically challenged such as myself) too easy to screw up. Yes, I know
what you're thinking. No, it isn't easy to screw up. But trust me, any
chemicals beyond water, coffee, and beer are a recipe for disaster. Okay,
rum is fine too, but that's all.

So, as I looked at my beautifully hued bare teak, I wondered about oiling
it. As mentioned, it needs to be done several times a season, but rubbing on
teak oil is no big deal and it's not too complicated as far as chemicals go.
In addition, if you do decide to just let it go, the teak simply turns into,
well, teak.

Anyone else out there using oil?

To throw a different perspective in the mix. I'm currently using a heat gun
to strip the varnish, yes it really works and works well, but I'm apply teak
oil instead of varnish or any other product. Did the cabin overlay, port
cap rail, dorads, last season, and am now working on the starboard caprail.
I have to oil several times a season, but its really easy to do! I have a
full boat cover for the winter months.
