Diesels should be run at 80 - 85% max load, based on proper transmission
ratio and propeller match. Diesels prefer to work and offer best performance
if they are loaded 80-85%. Thos that put around at 1000 rpms thinking they
are saving their diesel are probably introducing more wear then if they put
it in the proper operating load this is 80-86% of full capacity.

If you are going to be pulling the prop shaft anyway, why not do it now? If
you are not pulling the prop shaft why not wait until shortly before you
launch so that there is no chance of damage while sitting. (Of course if
the shaft will be turning fast, and the bearing is currently badly worn I
suppose you could damage the transmission).

the hard(of course supplying water etc for cooling and only running in
neutral). I would like to run it on occasion without doing damage to the
boat.
Diesels aren't real happy running in neutral, and in fact (as I have been
told), should get a workout while loaded if they are started. That suggests
that running the engine to warm it up with no load is not the best idea.
