I don't think anyone has thrown down any mandates. Folks like Cindy, Bruce,
and myself have simply offered up options. None of them have been
implemented and, personally, I don't care. When we first transitioned to
SailJazz, I had put together a 'skeleton' site in the event nothing would
have turned up. That site is still there and ready to go, but it is by no
means the end-all, be-all solution.

As for 'not panicking', I don't think anyone has panicked. We are all fond
of the Baba List and the friends we've made through virtual acquaintance,
but no one will be losing any sleep over this. However, it's best to have
something in place (either transitory or permanent), before the changes
occur.

I, for one, am completely in favor of DIY solutions. After all, this isn't a
supreme court nomination. [g]

I'm bothered at what I sense is the direction things are headed. We seem to
be getting too focused on another DIY approach, driven not by the fact this
is our best group decision but simply because, if you'll excuse me, there
are people on the list who think they know how to do it, and no doubt do,
but who I sense are a bit too willing to brush under the carpet the rocky
road that Rick E only too often had to drive us along.

My impression is that things are starting to border on a very UNdemocratic
process...perhaps a bit similar to the one we just had dumped on us. Maybe
the word "steamrollered" is a bit too strong, but I confess it comes to
mind.

I never saw someone prepare a "ballot", ie, list out all the issues, all the
options (including paying SailJazz), pros and cons (unbiased), and ask
people to vote on them. Plus such a "vote" needs time to let others
contribute. After all, the bomb only dropped Friday afternoon (in perfect
keeping with the fact that Friday afternoon is always when bad news is
released), but for goodness sakes, it's not even Monday yet! Many people on
this list may be out sailing or carving pumpkins or whatever. Bruce seems
to have the right advice, "sit tight for a while", but I'm afraid it's
falling on some deaf ears.

We still have a week on this list, and beyond that we could very easily,
quickly and temporarily (with emphasis on the last word) use something like
sailboatowners, Yahoo Groups, MSN Groups, etc, until we had democractically
given enough time to reach as much of the existing list as possible. By
plunging in and starting to immediately use something like Rick's message
board, or have Cindy set up a listserv, or whatever, the train starts
moving, we all get shoved on board, perhaps get locked in, only to find out
it's going in the wrong direction for us. More important, Murphy could well
decide to impose some serious, unforseen problems or disadvantages.

Yes, the Valiant list has moved far far faster than we have, and it isn't
what I would have advocated. However, they have gone to Yahoo Groups and
about half their people have already moved over to it. If Yahoo is OK for
them, why is it not for us? Or MSN Groups? Must we automatically and
immediately dismiss such Groups as completely out of the question, or, in
extreme cases, dismiss them as a four-letter word without any facts to
support such a statement?

There, I've had my say. I am saddened by this turn of events, enough to
seriously contemplate a listless existence.
