1/2" chain weighs 3 pounds per foot. This is almost double the weight
of 3/8". This is a lot ( a real lot) or weight to put in the bow of a
30 foot boat. I carry 250 feet of 3/8 on a 35 and on Bob Perry's
advice added lead to the stern to keep her on her lines. A better
solution for passages is to keep the chain in the bilge, but it is a
lousy solution for emergencies.
