After seeing the myriad of vast knowledge and strong opinions on heads and plumbing, I was hoping someone might give me some insight on cleaning stainless water tanks. I have the 2 75 gallon stainless baffled tanks under the settees with the 8"(?) inspection ports.

Water was running clean when we bought the boat this summer -- but the old owner (who used the boat as a condo) said purified the water but never filled the tanks more than half full. For the long trip back from Annapolis to New England we filled them up, and within a day or so of sailing the water had bits of black algae in it with no smell. It eventually clogged the pump and we lost water for the rest of the trip (Yes, no manual pump, something we'll remedy this winter).

Anyway, after draining the tanks and adding purification tablets it ran clean -- until we sailed again, losing another pump very quickly. I finally inspected the tanks -- a black slime on the inside of the top of the tank seems to be the culprit. Water stays clean unless we sail ;-)

I plan on adding filters before and after the pump, but I'm not sure how to clean the stainless. I've heard bleach is a no no.

Any thoughts appreciated.
