The question isn't so much how many years old the engine is, but rather
how many hours since the last overhaul (if any). As long as you feed
the engine oil, change the filters, and do whatever maintenance is
called for, the engine need not be tossed out just for age. OWTW's
Universal M-40 is 20 years old and doing well (although it looks as
though the injectors are due for a cleaning). We replaced the
transmission when it died (cheaper than rebuilding the tranny!) and have
no reason to think that's money down the rat hole. We currently have
2100 hours on the engine.
