We have used Shadetrees for the past seven years, a larger rectangular one
behind the mast and a tapered shorter one before the mast. We found that
they weren't any more expensive to buy than to make, so we got their
off-the-shelf ready-made awnings. They are difficult to assemble for the
first time in a season, so we leave ours assembled but rolled up on the side
deck when they are not in use. During storms we just roll them up
horizantally and bungie them to the mast and shrouds - takes about four
minutes if you are sufficiently motivated. The cloth and stitching have held
up very well, but we have to replace the plastic snaps every two or three
years. The snaps are cheap enough and readily available, just wish there
were longer lasting ones...
