Hello all, we have a continuing problem with our anchor locker. I posted a
month or two ago and got some helpful suggestions on what to look for. We
have a 1985 Baba-30, and have sailed her many miles in all sorts of
conditions, and just recently have developed a problem with water leaking
all the way down under the V-berth, down under the cabin sole, and into the
bilge area under the engine, whenever we get any seas at all. We did add a
windlass last year, and anchor chain, to the starboard side of the anchor
pulpit.
It's really distressing - if we beat into any kind of head winds, even 10 or
15 knots, with any waves at all over the bow, we are getting enough water in
to pump the bilge every hour or two. So it's become issue # 1 on our list.
- The water is pooling on the port side of the anchor locker; there is a
drain hole on the bottom of the anchor locker on the starboard side, but
NONE on the port side. So the divided anchor locker has water standing in
the bottom on the port side which seeps down and finds its way into the
bilge, past anything stowed in the V-berth and getting all that wet. The
starboard side appears to all work OK, with the long fiberglassed-in pipe
intact, for drips that find their way into the starboard side. We have also
determined that the large anchor locker drain (which is a Y- configuration
to a thru-hull) works just fine with no leaks. This port side is a real
mystery though - and we wonder how we were ever able to go into head winds.
We have seen some real weather offshore in this boat - even since the
windlass and chain has been installed. We beat into 40-knot head winds for
a couple of days in June (another story :-) before we turned around and
headed back, and we didn't have any problems then.
So far, what we have been doing is stuffing plastic bags in the holes - on
the port side, into the anchor hawse pipe, which a small hole feeding to the
anchor rode exists, and on the starboard side, into the windlass.
- Is there supposed to be a drain hole on the port side? Are we looking at a
design flaw that will need to be corrected at a haul-out? Has anyone seen
this kind of problem? Any other solutions or stop gaps we could do, to keep
us moving? We are still hoping to get to Trinidad by July or August for a
haul out and bottom job, but are afraid that we'll have to haul in the DR or
Puerto Rico to fix this. We're in the Exumas now, with only this black cloud
over our otherwise sunny skies.
