Don,
  I had the exact same problem with my Yanmar 3QM30 engine. Over time
the problem continually got worse. I pulled the tranny and many of the
plates inside were worn. Another contributing factor was a very
clogged internal brass filter. I am currently cruising and had the
tranny rebuilt on Borneo for $600 US dollars. It works like a charm
now.
