Interesting transmission situation.

I, too, had a M-11 Volvo and all was well until I was told by a mechanic
that the engine might go on forever, but the transmission days were
numbered.

He also advised that fixing the transmission is the same as throwing
good money away. He suggested making sure that the oil level was always
up and let it go until it gives up. Fortunately, after a 300 mile
(round trip up the inside passage) and then for another voyage into the
San Juans, the transmission gave up. We were towed back to Friday
Harbor and found out that it would likely be a couple of months before
it could be fixed. We were towed across the Strait and back to our slip
in Port Ludlow and went about replacing the engine and transmission.
Now, with a significantly greater degree of confidence and less noise we
now motor about with a new Universal engine. *Diesel Engines: M-25XPB*

However, the experience made us about $10,000 lighter in the bank
account. Such as the life of a sailboat owner.
