Either a piece at a time on deck (starting with the uppermost extrusion) or,
what ProFurl used to recommend, all together on the forestay on the ground
and lifting the forestay into place. Personally I have found lifting and
attaching the forestay with extrusions on it very difficult, so I do a piece
at a time. The terminals, obviously, have to fit inside the extrusions in
either case. We have the 42 models and 3/8" StayLoks, and have to remove the
base of the Staylok (not the part that grabs the stay) to get the extrusions
on or off. We tie a slip not around the extrusions with a halyard to keep
them in place and hoist them as we add pieces. (Whichever way you go, be
sure to use the LockTite they provide - purple - or get some blue - on the
little set screws connecting extrusions so they don't back out.) The trick
to a new installation is getting the top piece cut to the right length and
the bottom supports cut to the right length. Lastly somebody climbs the mast
and installs the stop-thingie on the forestay above the extrusions. If you
knw the right length (doing a replacement) the process only takes a couple
of hours.
We run our furling line along the base of the stantions through little
stantion blocks (can also use dead-eyes) and secure it in the cockpit with a
Spilock sheet stopper.
It's a good furling unit; the only trouble we ever had with one in sixteen
years was a bearing seal deteriorated once and ProFurl at the time replaced
the seal and grease for free. That was before they were bought up by, I
believe, Wichard...
