An item we got from a nurse traveling on another cruising boat years ago has
added to our cruising convenience. In fact, I used one just yesterday, and
every time I use one, I remember that outstanding young woman who shared it
with us. The device is a "catheter syringe." It is a plastic syringe with a
plastic spout with a cap and holds about 60 ml (quantities are marked making
keeping records of fluid uses convenient). Its uses? Filling batteries with
water; filling lamps with oil; and yesterday, I used it to fill the
hydraulic reservoir on the autopilot. They cost a couple bucks each (you
might find someone at the hospital that can get you a bunch free). I have
several and write on them with a marker their use so as to not mix contents.
And, I guess they also might be handy to irrigate and clean wounds. The uses
aboard boat are limited only by the imagination. Maybe even injecting Liquid
Boat Life...
