I would nominate our pal the Heat Pal!
The Heat Pal is an Origo non-pressurized alcohol stove which can be used
for cooking or, as we mostly use it, as a safe and effective heater. One
fill-up will burn almost all night and the CO detector says it's not a
problem. Our friends (the ones who recommended it to us) use a big river
rock over the burner and they say it makes it more effective. We bought
it for heat while chartering and we've used it for cooking when the
charter boat stove failed. It won't make you stop using propane, but it
does get the job done. For aesthetics (and dryness) we prefer our solid
fuel heater (fireplace), for all-out heat we prefer our catalytic
heater, but the Heat Pal can run while we sleep without killing us and
we like that a lot! Alcohol has an odor which some folks don't like and
there is some condensation. These issues don't bother us so the Heat Pal
would be my nomination for a "Little Thing That Makes A Big Difference".
