For those curious about Linux, give Ubuntu Linux a try
(www.ubuntu.com). It's possible to download free CD images that can
then be booted up (from the CD - there is no, repeat no damage or change
to your existing operating system). I've played with it in the past and
liked what I saw. However, having committed, for better or worse, to
SuSE Linux (now owned by Novell, which is, IMHO, is rather like having
Lucas electrics in your life...), I stayed with what I already know.
 
In general, releases like Ubuntu move Linux closer to mass releases.
Dell is reported to have something like 10,000 requests for Linux.
There are an amazing number of really useful tools as well as some
goodies under Linux (e.g., it's actually easier to watch TV on my Linux
box than on my WinXP boxes). And overall reliability is amazing. My
Linux box is now up to almost 68 days of uptime. Still, even with a
number of tools which take care of some of the more "computer geek"
aspects of Linux, it's still something of an adventure on occasion.
