I had 2 whisker poles, to allow the jib and staysail to be poled out
wing and wing. They were stowed on the stanchions, and stuck out a
bit, as you measured.

Tacking one day, the jibsheet seemed stuck and I realized what had
happened just as it popped the pole out of the forward holder,
pivoted it upwards so that it also popped out of the aft holder, and
I watched helplessly as the pole slid to the bottom of the bay, where
it is now stored. At least I'll always know where it is, to quote
Ruth Gordon in Harold and Maude.

Inboard of all sheets now seems like a better option!
