I recently had an insurance condition and value survey on our 85 Baba 30 and
the surveyor noted SS pitting at the heel fitting of the rudder. He
recommended that it be cleaned, epoxy coated and sealed and drain any water
that may be inside by drilling holes in the bottom of the rudder blade and
capping them afterwards.

In talking with the folks at the yard where "Sojourn" is on the hard for the
winter, it's been recommended that the rudder be removed for this work to be
properly done while having an opportunity to inspect steering mechanisms and
service as necessary, since there probably has never been work done to the
rudder since she was built (I've owned since 2001)

Two questions - how much effort is there to remove the rudder and how much
clearance do you need below the rudder to get it off the boat (being told
that they will probably have to raise the boat)? She's up on blocks and
there's only about 1 foot or so below the bottom of the rudder blade and the
ground.

Anyone out there have similar experiences?
