As many of you may know, but perhaps not all, the FCC has terminated the
requirement of Morse Code in order to obtain a full General Class Ham
license. The future use of SSB by cruisers may expand with this change in
rules. Iridium and Globalstar subscription rates can prove fairly expensive.
I'm not at all certain that one can predict the preferred medium for
communication, downloading GRIB files, etc.

Iridium phones cost about $1300, and monthly service for pretty limited
service is about $1,000 per year. Beyond the minimal base rate, it's often
between $2 and $3 per minute.
