I'm servicing Mandisa's winches this week. I have a question about the
old-style (circa 1983/4) Lewmar 16 2-speed, non-self tailing winches.
Mandisa has five of these guys for the halyards and the staysail sheets.
These winches are different from the current version of the same model
as depicted in the Lewmar literature. Everything comes apart except for
a large gear at the base of the winch which seems to be caged in by the
frame. I can't see that it can be removed except possibly by removing
the winch from the base (and maybe not even then). My solution (for the
moment) is to clean and regrease it as well as possible with it in
place. I can't help wondering if I'm missing something. Is there a
simple way to remove this gear?
