The cushions on Gray Eagle are 20 years old and also need to be
replaced. We are not worried about finding good material for the job
it's the foam that makes this project a big deal. So far, we have
replaced two sections with new foam but the density of the foam we used
is not firm enough for the job. The 20 year old foam has collected lots
of mildew odor and other boat smells and after trying many cleaners and
sprays found it impossible to bring them back to a pleasant state. In
the end we decided it would be best to start over with the correct foam.
The question is, what is the correct foam? On my next trip to Annapolis
I will stop at the Sailrite shop and check their supply of foam and
material. The difficulty in replacing the old foam with new is to get
the correct shape cut so it looks just like the original. If you take
the cover off a corner cushion you will see that shaping these things
involves some artistic touch as well as experience. Personally, I'll
stay with rigging, engines and wires and leave the cushion project to
my, more skilled, wife.

One other suggestion: We added a one inch layer of "memory foam" to the
top of the old "V" birth cushions and it was a great improvement in
sleeping comfort. The "memory foam" is expensive - there are reasonably
priced sources for this on the Internet.
