When we replaced our head, we did the same thing as Cindy - cut the existing
bolts off flush with the platform and set new ones in from above into
slightly smaller holes so the bolts would create grooves in the wood as they
were driven in. Also no problems since (on that score). We replaced our head
with a Groco Series K (some good parts about it, some bad) but looking back
on it we should have replaced it with a Blake-LeVac (manual) vacuum type
head. Other people down here have had them for up to fifteen years w/o
problems. The maintanence is to replace the diaphram of the manual pump
every three or fours years (remember, continuous use here) and the seal on
the head seat at about the same schedule. Super easy. The only downside is,
they are kinda short, so one should consider building a little platform
above the existing platform to get them to an adequate height...
