Hi Ken,

The wooden head platform is hollow beneath and the bolts were installed
(pointing up from beneath) prior to the installation of that piece into
the whole head structure. Removing the platform without destroying it
will be a challenge, but that's the only way you can remove the bolts.

I "think" that a Wilcox Criton Head-Mate will fit on the old bolts
without modification. (Mandisa came with one of these.) However, this is
a nasty little head that hides in the dark plotting ways to break on you
when you need it most. I DON'T recommend it! We replaced ours with a
Raritan Compact-II which has a different bolt pattern, but which fits
nicely into the Baba 30 head compartment. Since I'm the one who cares
the most about a functioning head, the job of replacing it fell to me.
(Rick was busy doing some silly thing like refurbishing the engine.)
First of all, the head platform was sound with no rot or other
structural problems. I chose not to cut the platform out and instead cut
the bolts off flush with the platform and ground the exposed ends
smooth. I then made a pattern for the new holes and drilled them a
little smaller than was needed. I used stainless steel lag bolts to
attach the head to the platform. Several people here (mostly named
"Rick") advised me not to do this. However, after three years they are
just as tight as ever - even after being used in some very unpleasant
conditions.

Peggie recommended the PH-II head. I'm not sure that that head with the
full sized bowl will fit in the Baba 30 head compartment. We bought the
Compact-II because of the size issues, but it's been a great little
head! Since then, we've discovered that the Compact-II pump assembly can
be replaced with a PH-II pump which should be a lot better for "full
time" cruising use. Raritan actually sells the head set up this way and
calls it a PH-C. It should fit nicely into the space. Another head that
I've seen used in a Baba 30 is a Lavac. I've heard great things about
that head too.
