Here is the stove installation on our Panda 40. A location was factory-built
in the cabinetry for a fireplace or heater. It once had a diesel heater,
which had leaky hoses and pump. The fuel tank took most of the closet space,
which also smelled of diesel. We replaced it with a propane heater. This
heater gets its combustion air from outside through the double stack. The
combustion air goes down the outside pipe cooling it. The inside pipe is the
hot exhaust. The tile work is not necessary (some heat-reflecting source is
important) but we think this adds a bit of elegance rather than the
stainless sheets from previous (We also had a similar installation on a
previous boat). This particular heater has a window, which shows the flame,
almost like a real fireplace. We have a fan atop the cabinet shelf that
swivels to blow hot rising air either aft toward the galley or forward into
the forepeak. And it works just fine. We have had all sorts of heaters from
wood burning to coal to oil to diesel. Propane is the only way to go from
our experience.
