I have the same reefing issue on our Baba 30. I think it is less of
a problem than on larger boats. I have a pivoting block mounted to
the deck aft of the mast step. The reefing lines come out of the
forward end of the boom though a clutch. I lead the line through the
deck block and back up to an open winch on the mast. I need to be at
the mast anyway to release the main halyard so if it is really nasty
I clip into points at the mast step. I have been able to get a very
flat sail shape with the clew right on the boom in this way.
Incidentally an embarrassing rookie mistake a few weeks ago was
pulling the first reef point line through the clutch into the boom
because I had lost the stopper knot and was not watching what I was
doing. Yuch! 4 hours with fish tape and messenger lines including
winching the bitter end back through the boom clutch was very
instructive. Lesson learned!
