Yes, mast height does vary from boat to boat. Gray Eagle's mast is 4
inches shorter than the sail plan drawings indicate. This does not
impact the bridge clearance issue much but it does affect the
construction of a new main. Because the goose neck is lower than it
should be the aft end of the boom is higher at the gallows. This allows
the boom to hit the gallows when jibbing. I often wonder why the
original rigger couldn't have followed the sail plan as design by Mr.
Perry. The next time I re-rig the standing rigging I'm thinking about
raising the mast step with some reinforcing blocks glassed in to make up
the lost height and finally get the boom level. (just a thought).
