Lady Stardust had a peel job; she also had the outer layer of mat peeled off
as the osmosis had separated that layer from the inner layers in many
places. However the previous owner had just bought her and had commissioned
a survey which had missed the problem. It was only a few weeks later that he
saw the problem, just a few small blisters which when opened up revealed a
much bigger problem, then he put her up for sale. To his credit he dropped
his price by about $10K which is what I paid for the work to be done. So on
the down side I would recommend you get a surveyor who really knows his
stuff on osmosis (Mine was a navel architect specialising in GRP ships) to
investigate further but on the up side, it's not that big a deal to have the
work done, and gives you a solid boat to work with. Part of my job required
all the seacocks and through hulls to come off allowing a proper service and
re-bedding also the rudder came off allowing that to be fully checked.
I felt a lot happier after the work was done that the boat was sound.
Oh, one problem I had was that the yard didn't remove the bobstay fixing
plate as it was to difficult for them, something I had to do later, try to
get this done at the same time if you do need to have a full peel.
