A big part of the answer to your question depends on the bottom you will be
hooked in. For sand, grass and mud, chafe is less of and issue and nylon
works fine. For a Baba 30, you would probably want to use 5/8" 3 strand
nylon, the length being determined by the depth you hook in, 7:1 is the
accepted standard. Many, including myself, splice this nylon rode to chain.
The chain provides chafe protection and some weight to assist the anchor to
dig in. In bottoms with a high probability of chafe, chain is the way to go.
The size and type and amount of chain depends on your windlass, if you have
one, and water depth.
My ground tackle and equipment is as follows; 35 lb. CQR swivel attached to
175' of 5/16' BBB chain. A 20 lb. CQR ( Lunch hook) to 40' of 5/16" BBB
chain spliced to 250' of 5/8' nylon rode. I also use the 250' of 5/8 nylon
rode with my parachute anchor. Also; I have a 65 lb. Luke anchor on the
ready which can be attached to either the chain, the chain/nylon rode or
both.
This anchor combination has never failed us. I REALLY wish I could say the
same for the 45' Carver Power Yacht which drug anchor this past weekend and
hit our Baba.
Enjoy your Baba 30, We love ours.
Fair winds, blue water.
