Earlier this year I built some new bookcases and shelving behind the
dinette and settee, as well as all the woodwork in my shower. I
finished them in Epiphanes. I used the gloss product for the base coats
(about 6 coats) and the rubbed effect for the final 2 coats. It is a
very dull, smooth warm finish, and was exactly what I wanted and
expected.

Sometimes, when not thoroughly mixed, the flattening agent that gives
the lower gloss look to semi gloss, satin and rubbed effect finishes
does not get uniformly distributed. This can cause the resultant finish
to be "glossier" than desired. Make sure that the finish is thoroughly
mixed before applying, and continue mixing as you apply it.

As a side note, I had use a different technique for the application of
the gloss and rubbed effect to get them to flow out well. I could use
NO overbrushing with the rubbed effect, otherwise it showed up in the
dried finish.

Hi All,

I just cleaned and re-varnished the engine box and companionway ladder
on Mandisa. I used two coats of Crystal Gloss (for protection) and
covered that with one coat of Epifanes Rubbed Effect. I've never used
this before and I was expecting something about halfway between gloss
and satin. What I got was a finish almost as shiny as gloss. This is
kind of pretty, but very different from the finish on the rest of the
boat's interior.

I thinned the varnish to a workable (slightly thick) consistency and
applied it with a clean, high quality brush while stirring continuously.

The previous coats were fully dry and had been lightly sanded (220).

Does this sound normal to folks who've used this varnish before?
