Mark- I recently finished repowering my 35.
Originally she had a Universal 5432. The engine
stringers were offset exactly 1"(to port). I didn't
realize this until we dropped in the new Yanmar and
the shaft was 1" off! I called the new owner of the
Universal, and sure enough the brackets going from the
mounts to the engine moved it back to starboard by 1".
It seems it would have been a lot more work to do
this unnecessary modification. Maybe all the beds
were made for an engine that had it's output shaft off
center, and the Universal was a nuisance by being
symmetrical? Who knows...I think the idea of having
two crews(standard and metric) is making more sense
now...
As for the tiller arm, I am in the process of
selecting a below decks pilot as well. I am going to
mount the arm above the quadrant on the remaining key.
From memory I have about the same amount exposed as
you. It looks like I will have to go with a ram that
utilizes a separate pump mounted elsewhere. I haven't
decide which brand yet, but will post when I do with
pics.
Fair winds,
Jim Swallow
