This is a fascinating problem and one perhaps of many solutions. One I might
offer as way out, but did happen to me. My prop got wrapped in poly crab-pot
line. The prop, when I dived on it, looked like a bundle of lines of many
colors. RPM did increase from lack of the ability of the blades to bite.
Strangely though, it still had enough bite to move the boat.

I thought I made it safely across Florida Bay one night motor sailing to Key
West from Everglade City skirting through the vast stone crab pot field. I
didn't.
