About that discrepancy between the two sides of the boat: It has been my
observation over the years that Taiwan boats (in general) are built by two
crews. The portside and starboard side, one using a metric rule and the
other an English measuring stick.

I had forgotten the exact arrangement of the rudder-hanging on our P-40, but
the reference I made was to a different make but with nearly identical
installation-but included pintail and gudgeon. Using the Teflon bearing at
the base of the rudder shaft made an amazing difference in the friction
reduction. And as far as I could tell (by the gap caused by the raising of
the shaft) after a hundred thousand, or roughly, miles, it did not appear to
wear out significantly.

I was asked off-line how I got to the base of the shaft-if I had to remove
the rudder. I did not. I removed the shoe, which was not an easy or pleasant
job. It was one I regretted, but very pleased with the results after putting
in the Teflon.
