I hate to say it, 'cause it's not a fun job, but the best bet really is
to use a buzz box to find your way through the wiring. You can flip
breakers and watch lights to see much of what's happening but if you
know there are mods in the wiring, it's already too late to rely on a
diagram which is only an approximation of what's in place.
