The sail was built with cruising ( the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and East
Coast) as the primary intent and is built of Dacron. It is triple stitched
and of 9 oz. Challenge cloth. I have heard that the full battens, or battens
in general, are a death sentence for a cruising sail as the battens tend to
wear through rapidly. On the other side of the coin, battens eliminate, or
at least greatly reduce flutter at the leech of the sail. Flutter
accelerates the breakdown of Dacron, or any other sail material. Reinforced
Batten Pockets which are properly designed and integrated into the sail
should not reduce the life of the sail. This is another of those subjects
which could be argued both ways. The newer high tech materials, used for
racing, are much faster and MUCH less durable. They don't like to be folded
or flaked. I spent the first 12 years of my sailing experience racing J
Boats, Tornado's, and a variety of skimming dishes on lakes, bays and
off-shore. I am now WAY to old, tired and fat for that type of sailing. I
love the Baba 30 and her sailing qualities; but lets face it, the Baba 30 is
not the fastest 30 footer on the water. Racing sails tend to work better on
racing sailboats.
I am now, more than happy to watch the hotrod sailboats, which tend to
resemble big bleach bottle, rip past me. Lorac may take a bit longer to get
there, but I am not in a hurry any more and I love it when they ask, while
passing me, what type of boat it is and it sure is beautiful. It is almost
comical when the fast boats get into a storm and are fighting to keep the
boat under control while we pass them (the Baba now being the faster boat)
in reasonable comfort.
