Regarding sewing machines..as an ex-sailmaker and confirmed sew-it-yourself
addict, I didn't want to spend the money on an industrial sewing machine,
new or used...not even the SailRite ones. So I took some sunbrella samples
to an old local neighborhood family-owned sewing shop and asked what they
had in used machines that would handle this cloth, thickness, etc. I got an
old Phaff 262 for $75...and it's sewn everything I've put thru it!!! Look
around town. Never know what you'll find.

Sunbrella should sew about like 8-10 ounce twill canvas. It is easier tham
"Jeans". More stable. Where you run into problems is when you try to bind
the edges. You then go through 5 layers minimum and up to maybe 8 if you
have a zipper and some plastic in there. This is pretty tough for a home
machine even with a walking foot attachment. With the money you save doing
it yourself you could porobably buy one of the inexpensive walking foot
machines and turn yourself into canvas-man. There are certainly enough
places on our Babas that could use covers to pay for the machine cost.

On the other hand. I have an industrial machine Con-sew 206RB model w/ a
walking foot which will make just about anything you need from heavy
canvas/Cordura projects to leather stuff. This machine will plow through 10
layers of fabric and a couple of layers of webbing with ease. I would
suggest getting the pulley changed to SLOW the machine down as much as
possible to make your sewing more accurate.

Angeles. They will sell you one with an industrial table shipped to your
doorstep.
