Correcto,

I am an old diving officer on submarines. The ballasting of a submersible is
unique in that submerged you get to feel the full influence of the moment
arm of fore - aft, port - stbd, ballasting. To keep the submarine vertical
there is massive lead ballast banks placed in the ballast tanks and this
prevents the sub from turning upside down when in rough waters and close to
neutral ballast that you might find at periscope depth.

To trim the sub, water is shifted around internally from tanks place fore -
aft, but care has to be taken not to place too much forward and aft or the
sub becomes vulnerable to the dumbbell effect and it is hard to control trim
at slow speeds.

Keeping all this in mind, trimming the sailboat, and the CG is a number, but
only in reference, as it changes and you want to keep your carry on weight
as low as possible and evenly distributed, but the bulk should be placed
amid ships if possible to help minimize excessive pitching.

There are other similarities too, but I will save these for a rainy day. I
wish you well... and just maybe, super-glue Rick will put her back together
again? She certainly looks beautiful.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Usually, even moreso today than in the past, CG and other weight related
calcs (displacement, stability) are figured without any 'stuff'. Some
manufacturers even list without engine!

Also, keep in mind that locating your center of gravity as you are in the
profile view, does not actually locate the CG. There is also a vertical
component to the CG. Think of it as an inverted pendulum. The higher up your
'stuff', the more leverage you'll have.
