Gary,

Try disconnecting the shift cable from the transmission and see if the
shift lever on the transmission can be shifted by hand. If you can get
the lever to move into forward, neutral and reverse the problem is in
the cable or pedestal shifter or the adjustment of the cable. If you can
not mover the transmission shift lever by hand I would consult with a
mechanic as any problem with the transmission shifting can be pretty
complicated.

There is a screw and nut on the aft facing side of my pedestal that
holds the cable for the shift lever. If this comes undone and slips into
the pedestal the transmission will not shift. Getting this screw to line
up again so it can be re-secured (this time with a lock nut) is a
nightmare and will be the subject of much salty language. Be assured, it
can be done with a stiff wire and bright flashlight from the top of the
pedestal after the compass and its mount have been removed. In any case,
good luck and be glade you found this on land and not in the middle of a
summer squall.
