Ahhh…how easy it is to forget

Here’s my chainplate saga:

Note especially the hack job TaShing did by encasing the heads of the
chainplate bolts in 2” of epoxy. What were they thinking????

Apparently, my boat was of the ‘experimental’ vintage as it seems I’m the
only one who encountered this marvel. Other than that one problem, removal
and inspection was quite simple.

Hi Michael,

Sounds like a vastly better system on the Panda. We modified the design on
the Tayana. We opened and removed all the rotted plywood and bolts and
filled the space with solid teak, then ran bolts from outside the hull,
through a stainless external backing plate, then through the teak, overlying
glass and finally the new chainplates. Dreadful job.

We have owned both a Tayana 37 and a Panda 40. The Tayana chainplates are
$#@&*! to inspect or change, usual procedure seems to be drilling with hole
openers into the fiberglass covering, scoop the compost out, replace steel
and bolt thru the hull. One fellow backfilled the space left by wood with
ChockFast, a marine engine bedding compound we used for our mast step - it
supports 50,000 HP six-story engines so is pretty hard but made with
pheniolic(sp?) resins which give it a little elasticity, like regular
epoxy.

The Panda has a different arrangement - the chainplates are actually
oriented "athwartships" within the salon lockers. They are covered with that
diamond pattern interior padding, probably over fiberglass - never had to
open them up so don't know for sure. The bolts are exposed on either side
and can be drawn easily for inspection.
