Dave,

Interesting you should mention paint. I am very tempted to paint the
bowsprit with white, Sears, Weatherbeater paint and call it a day. After
all, some of the saltiest old square riggers sported white painted
bowsprits so I would be following in the foot steps of a true nautical
tradition:)

In any case, I'm personally not into the details and aesthetics when it
comes to brightwork. I admire those who can afford the time or money to
have their Baba's looking pristine in beautiful varnish. I'd rather be
sailing in the sun where varnish takes a toll instead of spending hours
  prepping wood. It's the mechanical and rigging systems that I don't
mind spending lots of time insuring they function reliably. With great
reluctance I reach for my brush and a can of Cetol so from three boat
lengths away we look acceptable. When I balance the time required to
maintain varnish vs.Cetol I selected the less time consuming solution
knowing very well how wonderful varnish would look.
