Re: securing the hatches in the sole: how about a bit of bungy cord
(short and thick for more resistance) running from the under side of the
hatch to a batten or stick wider than the opening? It'd take a little
playing around to get the right combination of flex and tension and
maybe more than one set of bungy cords and battens would needed for
longer hatches. The hatch might move around a bit if stuff lands on top
of it in a knockdown, but generally it should hold the hatch in place
but still allow removal (with some tugging).
