"We solved the problem of the anchor chain rubbing on the bobstay by
using
two anchor smubbers. We have a "U" shaped piece of steel that grabs
the
chain. Then we have one nylon snubber coming from each sice of the U
piece, one going through the port hawse hole and the other through the
starboard. We let the snubbers out far enough so that the U piece is
below
the bobstay (it is under water). The chain runs down from the U piece
and
does not rub on the bobstay.

  We do a similar thing with just one piece of 100' 3/4" three-strand nylon line with a chain hook in the middle. The extra length allows us to 1) set the snubber deep in the water so that the stretch of the nylon compensates for swells, leaving the chain on the bottom, and 2) to warp the boat around at anchor, pointing us in any direction - usually the direction the swells are coming from - so we won't roll in side seas. We do this by taking one lead from the chain hook back to a mid-ship or aft cleat and pulling on it - usually by hand - which turns the boat. Handy in places like Bandaras Bay, MX where the two-to-four foot swells always come in on the beam.
