The concern for me was with the main furled and the boom at rest in the
gallows. Originally the headroom under the boom was less than 6 feet. Now
it's high enough to stand under the bimini with clearance...the bimini we
created after the change. It's true that one might could raise the gallows
so high that the boom would not clear it when the main is raised, but this
was not the case here.

Does the underlying answer to the question not depend, in part, on
how the main sail is cut?

The sailmaker is able to make your leach shorter or longer.

On my next to last main, the leach was made longer and as a result
the boom was always crossing just in front of my eyes.

On my latest main, the leach was cut shorter.
