Ours drains fine too. We don't have a check valve and have never had any
problems with water coming up - even when heeled. We did have a clog
once (coffee grounds) and cleared it with a small plunger. As Dave said,
cover the other drain or you'll have a mess. Our only complaint is the
noise as water slaps the through-hull.

We bought a couple of wire sink strainers which really help to keep food
(and coffee grounds) out of the drain. They were about $5 each at the
hardware store.
