"However, we have a reverse cycle Air Conditioner installed that requires AC rather than DC current. "
How about a large AC inverter? We carry an 1800 watt one for our hooka rig, which draws about 1500 watts, works fine when the DC generator is topping off the batteries. The inverter also fills in for little duties like charging cordless drill batteries, Ni-Cads, running a computer or a microwave (if we had one), and in those instances the generator doesn't need to be on.
The nice thing about DC generators is that they are putting up to 1800 watts (150 amps DC) directly in to your batteries, whereas the AC inverter only supplies power to your shore connection/battery charger, and those are generally down in the 500 to 700 watt (40 to 60 amp DC) range.
